A Course Called Ireland

Posted on January 16th, 2013

Tom Coyne makes me look like I’m a rational and sane individual. There have been numerous occasions where I’ve questioned the wisdom of taking on this Top 100 Quest, but any uncertainty I’ve had is but a grain of sand on a beach compared to the doubts that Tom must have felt during his chosen golf quest. In the midst of a quasi-midlife crisis Coyne decided that what he needed to do was spend 16 weeks walking across Ireland and playing every seaside links hole that the country had to offer.

Pine Valley Golf Club: A Unique Haven of the Game

Posted on January 9th, 2013

by James W. Finegan Another example of a great American club with a great history book. James Finegan’s book was originally published in 2000 and is only available for purchase in the Pine Valley pro shop. This wonderful book covers the full history of the club beginning with the construction of the golf course and bringing us all the way up to the start of the 21st century. Everything is covered from various competitive play events to the legendary stories of both ordinary and great golfers finding despair and heartbreak on the Pine Valley golf course. The book ends

This Golfing Life

Posted on December 12th, 2012

by Michael Bamberger I was surprised that had never heard of this book when a friend recommended it to me a few months ago. What made my ignorance all the more surprising (at least, surprising to me) is that when I opened the book to the front page I saw that it was dedicated to someone I know! What a small world golf can be. So, I had a trip to the Dominican Republic planned and I decided to save this book for the flight which turned out to be a great idea as it timed out nearly perfectly

Golf Heaven: Insiders Remember Their First Trip to Augusta National Golf Club

Posted on November 7th, 2012

This book is a fun look at Augusta National Golf Club. Everyone who has ever played golf knows that Augusta National is hallowed ground and those who are fortunate enough to visit the club, either to see The Masters or to actually play the course, are among the luckiest golfers alive. The book is broken into two sections with the first being a history of the course and the magnificent tournament played there each April, The Masters. The second part of the book contains stories from a handful of golfers who tell tales of their first time visiting Augusta

The Immortal Bobby: Bobby Jones and the Golden Age of Golf

Posted on October 31st, 2012

The legend of Bobby Jones has been told many times over, but I have never quite seen it as well done as in this book. This detailed biography is a remarkable tale of a life that was wonderfully enriched by the great game of golf. Starting with childhood stories from East Lake Golf Cluband continuing through the amazing 1930 Grand Slam and on into his later years, Rapoport covers all the

The Match: The Day The Game Of Golf Changed Forever

Posted on October 10th, 2012

by Mark Frost In honor of yesterday’s recreation of the famed 1956 big money match between Byron Nelson/Ben Hogan and Ken Venturi/Harvie Ward I thought I’d put up a review of this fantastic piece of literature. I first read this book on the plane flying to the Monterey Peninsula for a trip that was to include a game at the glorious Cypress Point. The book chronicles an 18 hole match between the two professionals who were past their prime and the two amateurs who were among the hottest up and comers of the day in eloquent detail. Mark Frost

Perry Maxwell’s Prairie Dunes

Posted on September 19th, 2012

Prairie Dunes is one of my favorite courses and one that I personally believe is slightly underrated at its current spot of #25 on the Golf Digest 100 Greatest list. I’ve had the good fortune to have visited this club twice and made six loops around this fantastic golf course. On my first trip I purchased the official club history book and only recently discovered this excellent publication by Mal Elliott. Elliott’s book starts with a detailed history of the club that includes biographical information on Perry and Press Maxwell as well as a few vintage photos of the course.

Caddy For Life – The Bruce Edwards Story

Posted on August 29th, 2012

In 1973 a 19 year old kid named Bruce Edwards got an incredibly lucky break when he picked up the bag of the soon to be great Tom Watson. That year marked the beginning of a wonderful partnership that spanned 30 years and yielded multiple major championship victories. This biography chronicles one of the greatest caddy careers there has ever been from its inception to its sudden and tragic end in 2004 when Bruce lost his fight with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Told from inside the ropes, this tale of friendship, perseverance, success, and devastating loss will have you laughing, cheering and shedding tears.

Brassies, Mashies, & Bootleg Scotch: Growing Up on America’s First Heroic Golf Course

Posted on June 27th, 2012

This is a different sort of golf book. It’s not about golf itself or any specific golf course per se, but is an interesting collection of stories with National Golf Links of America as the backdrop. Bill Kilpatrick’s father was a skilled and respected greenkeeper back when golf was just beginning to pick up momentum in the United States who landed a job caring for C.B. Macdonald’s masterpiece National Golf Links. Bill’s family lived on the grounds at National and as a young boy he entertained himself by spending his free time helping with course maintenance, hanging around with the staff, and his most beloved of all activities – caddying.

The Story of Seminole

Posted on June 21st, 2012

I love a good club history book and The Story of Seminole is one of the best I’ve seen. This book is loaded with club history as well as incredible golf course photos. Truly a top notch golf publication. It is a wonderful addition to any golf book collection. This book has never been offered to the public so it can be very difficult to find and usually quite pricey. In my opinion it’s worth every penny.
