Old Macdonald is the newest course to open at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon. There had been a ten hole loop in play for the 2009 season and the full eighteen holes opened for play in 2010 with the official grand opening being on June 1, 2010. Prior to the grand opening the new course had been getting tons of press in the golf publications and the buzz around the course was pretty significant.

After traveling to Kentucky, Indiana and back to Kentucky on this golf trip I headed to Ohio for the final leg. The original purpose of my visit to Cincinnati was to play the Camargo Club just outside the city, but while arranging that game my host suggested that we have a game at his other club, Cincinnati Country Club. Never to one to turn down an opportunity to play a classic old course I jumped at the opportunity.

Rarely do I travel away from the East Coast for work, but in February of 2010 I had a business trip scheduled to Los Angeles to visit a couple of clients. Since I would already be in the area I thought it might be a good idea to squeeze in a little Top 100 golf after my meetings and make the most of being on the left coast. As I soon discovered . . . easier said than done.

I had not been to Arizona since I was about 14 years old so my memory of the area was pretty limited. I was excited to be getting back out there as an adult and see what this desert living business was all about. Although the main mission of this trip was to play at Stone Canyon Club in Oro Valley outside of Tuscon, I flew into Phoenix because it was a little easier from a travel logistics standpoint.

One of the real challenges of playing the Top 100 courses in the US is getting the timing right. A large percentage of courses on the list are in locations where the optimal time to play them is between May and October which means that the months of November through April can be very slow when it comes to working on the list. Over the first year or so of the quest a number of mistakes and miscues were made but fortunately I have since learned.

For over a century the mountains of North Carolina have served as a summertime oasis for those who wish to enjoy the cool temperatures found here during the peak of summertime and the beautiful changing of the seasons in the fall. Ever since George Vanderbilt constructed his world famous Biltmore Estate in 1895 the mountainous areas of North Carolina have been synonymous with leisure activities.

For the last 3 years I have made an annual pilgrimage to New York for a summer golf trip. The first year I played one Top 100 course, the next year I played two and this year I was going to try for three. Quaker Ridge was one of the places I really wanted to play but I didn’t have any contacts. Unlike some of the other New York area Top 100 courses, Quaker Ridge keeps a very low profile.

If you would have told me 10 years ago when first I started making trips to New York that my visits would evolve to the point that they included golf courses and grill rooms rather than cover charges and last calls I would have said you were nuts. Here we are 10 years later and my time in New York is spent chasing a white ball around the hills of Southampton and Westchester County instead of chasing skirts around Hell’s Kitchen and the Upper West Side. I guess it is true Mr. Dylan, the times really are a-changin’.

My good friend Greg and his wife Mary Elizabeth live in Dallas so I checked with them to see if they knew anyone who was a member at Colonial. Turns out that M.E. has a friend who’s grandmother was a charter member at the club. Her friend very graciously volunteered her husband to take me out for a round of golf. After a couple of emails with my host Scott we lined up a weekend and hoped for good weather.
