Pinnacle Golf Club

The original plan for the morning game before going to Scioto C.C. had been to play at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course designed by Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Since we were playing Jack Nicklaus’ childhood course, Scioto, and his tournament course, Muirfield Village, we thought it might be fun to play his college course as well. Unfortunately, the Scarlet Course was closed for a tournament so we began to look at our other options. Among the list of places we had to choose from was Pinnacle Golf Club. I had never heard of Pinnacle Golf Club before but was intrigued by the fact that Lanny Watkins, a native of my home town, had designed the course so we decided to check it out.

Austin Country Club

Posted on May 21st, 2012

Having been founded in 1899, Austin Country Club is the oldest organized golf club in Texas and one of the oldest in America. ACC also happens to be home to one of the greatest teaching professionals to have ever lived, Harvey Penick. Like many golf professionals of days gone by Penick began his lifelong work in golf as a caddie. In 1912 eight year old Penick began caddying at Austin Country Club and quickly advanced up the ranks until he became head professional at the ripe young age of nineteen. He then proceeded to spend the next 50 years of his life dedicating himself to golf, Austin Country Club and its members. During his tenure at ACC Penick played an instrumental role in developing the golf games of two time Masters winner Ben Crenshaw and U.S. Open winner Tom Kite. Late in life Mr. Penick also became a best selling author with Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book which is widely considered the very best instructional golf book ever written. I’m not big on reading golf instruction, but this is the one book I believe every golfer should own. The pages are filled with great tidbits of golf wisdom that we all need reminders about sometimes.

Escondido Golf and Lake Club

After a couple of days of playing Golf around Austin Andy, A.C. and I headed roughly an hour northwest to Horseshoe Bay where we would be visiting Escondido Golf and Lake Club. Andy’s high school buddy, Geoff, is a member here and would be hosting us for a game on the Tom Fazio designed golf course. On the way to Horseshoe Bay we drove right past Austin Golf Club in Spicewood which is Ben Crenshaw’s club

By the middle of March in Virginia the golf season starts to slowly come out of hibernation. The bermuda grass begins greening up and we start catching mid-60 to 70 degree days, but it’s still largely a tease because the golf courses don’t really start to hit their stride until mid to late May. In addition to the slow move out of dormancy there are also spring maintenance issues like greens aerations to deal with.

Whispering Woods Golf Club

On my recent trip to Pinehurst we played three new courses and revisited an old favorite. The third new course that we played was Whispering Woods in Whispering Pines. Whispering Woods was one of the more economical alternatives to the higher priced courses in the Pinehurst area that I had selected for this trip. I stumbled across this course on the internet and was excited to find that it had been designed by Ellis Maple who has designed some pretty good golf courses around the Carolinas including Grandfather Golf and Country Club which I had really enjoyed. The fact that we could play it for a scant $35 made it even more appealing.

As usual, I was the one who had the responsibility for selecting the courses when my group visited Pinehurst last month. Typically with this group we like to play one or two really good courses and then try to find a couple of low priced options that are not necessarily marquee name courses. After settling on Dormie Club (I can’t stop going back there. This would be my third visit!) and Mid Pines as our top shelf options I began to do some internet research in order to find lower price options for our other two games.

In 2012, I kicked off the golf travel season with a return trip to Pinehurst, North Carolina. One of my regular travel buddies, Jay, has an uncle who owns a condo right in the heart of Pinehurst. For the last couple of years Jay’s uncle has very generously allowed us to use the condo for a golf weekend in March.

Bob O’Link Golf Club

Back in 2010 when I set up a Chicago trip to play Shoreacres and Chicago Golf Club I had the opportunity to visit Bob O’Link Golf Club at the same time. I had the good fortune of becoming acquainted with a fellow golf nut named Dave who is a member there and he graciously invited me to come out for a visit with with my friends Blair and Steve. I had a game planned for the afternoon at Shoreacres, so Dave arranged for us to play first thing in the morning at Bob O’Link.

Dormie Club

The Dormie Club in Pinehurst North Carolina had a major underground buzz long before the first game of golf had ever been played on the course. It all started with a few photos of the Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw designed golf course posted to the internet and talk that the new course was destined for a Top 20 spot in the U.S. rankings. I have to admit that when I saw those first photos of the course they got my blood pumping.

Yeamans Hall Club

Posted on January 11th, 2012

The vision for Yeaman’s Hall Club began in 1916 when a 900 acre tract of land was acquired with the intent of developing a full scale winter resort club. The club would be located just 12 miles north of downtown Charleston, SC in Hanahan and would service wealthy northerners traveling south by train in search of warmer climates. The club plan called for two golf courses as well as an assortment of other leisure activities and amenities.
