Medinah Country Club

Medinah Country Club (Course No. 3)

Posted on July 2nd, 2012

Medinah Country Club is one of the courses in Chicago that ended up being a real struggle for me. In my previous trips to Chicago in 2009 and 2010 I tried to get Medinah on my itinerary, but it never quite worked out. In 2011 I even had a trip planned with a plane ticket and rental car booked but ended up canceling at the last minute when my Medinah contact fell through. I was beginning to wonder if this course might be my own personal great white whale. With the Ryder Cup is coming to Medinah this fall I was not overly optimistic about getting out there in 2012 as they would surely be limiting guest play leading up to the event.

Sea Pines Resort (Ocean Course)

Posted on June 25th, 2012

My family vacation kicked off with a round of golf at Sea Pines Resort’s Ocean Course. Not to be confused with Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course, Sea Pines Ocean Course is about two and a half hours south on Hilton Head Island and is one of the sister courses to Sea Pines Harbour Town Golf Links where the RBC Heritage is held the week after The Masters each year. From 2003 through 2007 I went to Hilton Head Island every November with a couple of friends for a little golf getaway. On one of those trips we had played Sea Pines’ Ocean Course but it had been so long ago that I didn’t really remember much about the course and I was anxious to give it another look.

Harbour Town Golf Links

Back in 2007 when I started my Top 100 quest Harbour Town Golf Links was the sixth course I played. Recently while on a family vacation I managed to get another loop around the course that hosts the RBC Heritage the week after The Masters every year. This is one of the great stops on the Tour and is always a huge party. The tournament has been won by some of the biggest names in the game who are rewarded with a hideous plaid jacket for their efforts. Below is a photo of 2012 winner Carl Pettersson.

The original plan for the morning game before going to Scioto C.C. had been to play at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course designed by Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Since we were playing Jack Nicklaus’ childhood course, Scioto, and his tournament course, Muirfield Village, we thought it might be fun to play his college course as well. Unfortunately, the Scarlet Course was closed for a tournament so we began to look at our other options. Among the list of places we had to choose from was Pinnacle Golf Club. I had never heard of Pinnacle Golf Club before but was intrigued by the fact that Lanny Watkins, a native of my home town, had designed the course so we decided to check it out.

Columbus, Ohio is a surprisingly great golf town with four golf courses currently ranked on the Golf Digest Top 100 list. For a city in the middle of Ohio with a population of just under 2 million that’s pretty impressive. I suspect that a big part of the reason a town like this has such remarkable golf is because the greatest professional golfer to ever live, Jack Nicklaus, is a native son of Columbus. Interestingly, of the four Top 100 courses in Columbus, three of them were built AFTER Jack had won at least 6 of his 18 major championships. I guess its safe to say that Jack may have exposed Columbus to the golf bug and the good people of Columbus were receptive.

Austin Country Club

Having been founded in 1899, Austin Country Club is the oldest organized golf club in Texas and one of the oldest in America. ACC also happens to be home to one of the greatest teaching professionals to have ever lived, Harvey Penick. Like many golf professionals of days gone by Penick began his lifelong work in golf as a caddie. In 1912 eight year old Penick began caddying at Austin Country Club and quickly advanced up the ranks until he became head professional at the ripe young age of nineteen. He then proceeded to spend the next 50 years of his life dedicating himself to golf, Austin Country Club and its members. During his tenure at ACC Penick played an instrumental role in developing the golf games of two time Masters winner Ben Crenshaw and U.S. Open winner Tom Kite. Late in life Mr. Penick also became a best selling author with Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book which is widely considered the very best instructional golf book ever written. I’m not big on reading golf instruction, but this is the one book I believe every golfer should own. The pages are filled with great tidbits of golf wisdom that we all need reminders about sometimes.

Back in 2009 I made visit to Columbus, Ohio to play The Golf Club and Double Eagle Golf Club. When I was arranging that trip I had hoped to be able to work Scioto Country Club and Muirfield Village Golf Club into the itinerary, but came up completely flat for contacts at either of those clubs.

After a couple of days of playing Golf around Austin Andy, A.C. and I headed roughly an hour northwest to Horseshoe Bay where we would be visiting Escondido Golf and Lake Club. Andy’s high school buddy, Geoff, is a member here and would be hosting us for a game on the Tom Fazio designed golf course. On the way to Horseshoe Bay we drove right past Austin Golf Club in Spicewood which is Ben Crenshaw’s club

By the middle of March in Virginia the golf season starts to slowly come out of hibernation. The bermuda grass begins greening up and we start catching mid-60 to 70 degree days, but it’s still largely a tease because the golf courses don’t really start to hit their stride until mid to late May. In addition to the slow move out of dormancy there are also spring maintenance issues like greens aerations to deal with.

Whispering Woods Golf Club

Posted on April 23rd, 2012

On my recent trip to Pinehurst we played three new courses and revisited an old favorite. The third new course that we played was Whispering Woods in Whispering Pines. Whispering Woods was one of the more economical alternatives to the higher priced courses in the Pinehurst area that I had selected for this trip. I stumbled across this course on the internet and was excited to find that it had been designed by Ellis Maple who has designed some pretty good golf courses around the Carolinas including Grandfather Golf and Country Club which I had really enjoyed. The fact that we could play it for a scant $35 made it even more appealing.
