Old Macdonald is the newest course to open at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon. There had been a ten hole loop in play for the 2009 season and the full eighteen holes opened for play in 2010 with the official grand opening being on June 1, 2010. Prior to the grand opening the new course had been getting tons of press in the golf publications and the buzz around the course was pretty significant.

Playing the Top 100 is rife with hurdles and pitfalls. Anyone who has been following my quest at this website knows that the largest and most difficult obstacle is the fact that about 85% of the courses are private and require a member host or sponsor to play. Searching for members is difficult when it comes to all clubs, but for a variety of reasons some are considerably more difficult than others. Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida is one of the most difficult ones on the list.

One of the challenges of playing the Top 100 is getting the timing right. Certain clubs are only open in the winter and certain clubs are only open in the summer. Oddly, at the time of this writing, there are only four courses in Florida that are on the list which means that the options for pursuing my Top 100 quest are fairly limited during the winter months. I played two of the four Top 100s in Florida back in 2007 and I hadn’t been back to the Sunshine State since.

After traveling to Kentucky, Indiana and back to Kentucky on this golf trip I headed to Ohio for the final leg. The original purpose of my visit to Cincinnati was to play the Camargo Club just outside the city, but while arranging that game my host suggested that we have a game at his other club, Cincinnati Country Club. Never to one to turn down an opportunity to play a classic old course I jumped at the opportunity.

Rarely do I travel away from the East Coast for work, but in February of 2010 I had a business trip scheduled to Los Angeles to visit a couple of clients. Since I would already be in the area I thought it might be a good idea to squeeze in a little Top 100 golf after my meetings and make the most of being on the left coast. As I soon discovered . . . easier said than done.

In the fall of 2009 I made a trip with my girlfriend to Tennessee where her family had rented a lake house for the weekend. Since her Dad and the other guys were going on a motorcycle ride and the girls were doing some tourist/shopping type of things I decided to play golf. In addition to arranging a game at Top 100 ranked Grandfather Golf & Country Club I was also able to line up a visit to the exclusive Diamond Creek Golf Club.

Through numerous circumstances, hobbies and events in my life I have been lucky enough to have traveled quite extensively throughout the United States. Even before I started this Top 100 madness there were only seven states where I had not left my footprint over the years. Back in 2007 when I looked at the Top 100 list for the first time I took note that if I could complete the list I would be able to visit four more new states leaving me with just three to visit in order to have been to all 50.

The third leg of my Kansas/Oklahoma swing brought me to Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa Oklahoma. After visiting Prairie Dunes and spending the night in Kansas Fred, Kyle and I hit the road in the morning for the three and a half hour drive to Tulsa. One of the pros at my club in Virginia had been able to arrange a game at for us. We were playing unaccompanied which meant we could not tee off until 1PM.

After Fred and I finished up our game at Flint Hills we drove back to the Wichita airport where we dropped the rental car and met up with Kyle who would be hosting us at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, KS. Kyle had already been playing at PDCC for the last 2 days in a member/guest tournament so he was at the airport to drop off his guest from the tournament and collect us for the 40 minute ride to Hutchinson.
