Harbour Town Golf Links

Back in 2007 when I started my Top 100 quest Harbour Town Golf Links was the sixth course I played. Recently while on a family vacation I managed to get another loop around the course that hosts the RBC Heritage the week after The Masters every year. This is one of the great stops on the Tour and is always a huge party. The tournament has been won by some of the biggest names in the game who are rewarded with a hideous plaid jacket for their efforts. Below is a photo of 2012 winner Carl Pettersson.

Muirfield Village Golf Club

Columbus, Ohio is a surprisingly great golf town with four golf courses currently ranked on the Golf Digest Top 100 list. For a city in the middle of Ohio with a population of just under 2 million that’s pretty impressive. I suspect that a big part of the reason a town like this has such remarkable golf is because the greatest professional golfer to ever live, Jack Nicklaus, is a native son of Columbus. Interestingly, of the four Top 100 courses in Columbus, three of them were built AFTER Jack had won at least 6 of his 18 major championships. I guess its safe to say that Jack may have exposed Columbus to the golf bug and the good people of Columbus were receptive.

Back in 2009 I made visit to Columbus, Ohio to play The Golf Club and Double Eagle Golf Club. When I was arranging that trip I had hoped to be able to work Scioto Country Club and Muirfield Village Golf Club into the itinerary, but came up completely flat for contacts at either of those clubs.

There’s not many places in America where cultures collide as much as Las Vegas, Nevada. Where else can can you find your typical meathead in a muscle shirt, moms pushing strollers, glammed-up fashionistas, dorky dads, the black socks and sandals senior crowd and a large international contingent of all kinds sharing the same space. Only in Vegas.

Pinehurst Resort (No. 2 Course)

Back in June of 2007 (which now feels like decades ago in golf years) Pinehurst 2 was the first Top 100 course I played. I happened to be in North Carolina on business and decided to swing on over to Pinehurst in order to play a U.S. Open course before my big trip to Shinnecock Hills the following month. Looking back, I have to laugh at my innocence that day back in 2007.

Fishers Island Club

Its a beautiful sunny day with a perfect temperature in the upper 60s, I’ve arrived by boat to one of the most beautiful spots I’ve ever seen and I’m about to play one of the world’s top rated golf courses. This is one of those moments in my life where I ask myself the question “How in the heck did I get here?” In this particular instance “here” is the 1st tee at the Fishers Island Club located on Fishers Island, NY.

Old Sandwich Golf Club

The first thing most people notice about Old Sandwich Golf Club is the unusual name. To hear the words “old” and “sandwich” combined conjures up images of a leftover hoagie abandoned in the back of the refrigerator or maybe a PB&J in brown bag tucked in the back of a middle school locker. In the golf universe the words “old sandwich” mean a top rated Coore & Crenshaw course located in Plymouth, Massachusetts. So why exactly would a golf club choose to name themselves Old Sandwich?

Boston Golf Club

Boston Golf Club is located in Hingham, Massachusetts which is about a 45-60 minute drive south of Boston towards Cape Cod. The actual distance traveled is only 16 miles which says a little something about the infamously bad Boston traffic. After a long and fun day at Myopia Hunt Club Kyle and I began making our way to Hingham at about 8:30PM.

As would be expected of a town as old as Boston there is a plethora of great golf. At the time of this writing there are four Top 100 ranked courses in Boston and the surrounding areas as well as numerous other great courses that merit carving out time for a visit. The most famous of all the great Boston golf courses is surely The Country Club located in the town of Brookline.

Blackwolf Run (River Course)

My girlfriend Brook is the most patient and understanding woman I know. People ask me all the time how she can tolerate me playing all the golf that I do. Just this past week alone I was asked that exact question four times. I have to admit that it’s a complete mystery to me. I’m writing this in early October 2011 and to date I have been on 10 out of town golf trips and have two more scheduled for an even dozen this year.
