Diamond Creek Golf Club

Posted on February 10th, 2011

In the fall of 2009 I made a trip with my girlfriend to Tennessee where her family had rented a lake house for the weekend. Since her Dad and the other guys were going on a motorcycle ride and the girls were doing some tourist/shopping type of things I decided to play golf. In addition to arranging a game at Top 100 ranked Grandfather Golf & Country Club I was also able to line up a visit to the exclusive Diamond Creek Golf Club.

Through numerous circumstances, hobbies and events in my life I have been lucky enough to have traveled quite extensively throughout the United States. Even before I started this Top 100 madness there were only seven states where I had not left my footprint over the years. Back in 2007 when I looked at the Top 100 list for the first time I took note that if I could complete the list I would be able to visit four more new states leaving me with just three to visit in order to have been to all 50.

Southern Hills Country Club

The third leg of my Kansas/Oklahoma swing brought me to Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa Oklahoma. After visiting Prairie Dunes and spending the night in Kansas Fred, Kyle and I hit the road in the morning for the three and a half hour drive to Tulsa. One of the pros at my club in Virginia had been able to arrange a game at for us. We were playing unaccompanied which meant we could not tee off until 1PM.

After Fred and I finished up our game at Flint Hills we drove back to the Wichita airport where we dropped the rental car and met up with Kyle who would be hosting us at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, KS. Kyle had already been playing at PDCC for the last 2 days in a member/guest tournament so he was at the airport to drop off his guest from the tournament and collect us for the 40 minute ride to Hutchinson.

Flint Hills National Golf Club

Flint Hills National Golf Club is located in Andover, Kansas just outside of Wichita. Landing in the Wichita airport was about as far on the other end of the spectrum from my last trip where I landed in Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Wichita’s airport is a typical small town airport where I was able to easily breeze right off the plane and down to the baggage claim to pick up my clubs which were already waiting for me. A $5 cab ride and 10 minutes later and I was all hunkered down in at my 49 dollar per night hotel room.

I am back in Chicago to play golf again and this time my friend Hayes is not with me so I wont be getting any of his Grandma’s pot roast. Too bad, that was one tasty meal. Fortunately, my friend and partner in the annual Ridley Cup golf tournament, Steve, has just moved to Chicago from Manhattan and graciously offered for me to stay at his place while I’m in town.

I am originally from Nebraska having been born in Omaha and living there until I was 12 years old. Every summer when I was a kid my parents would load my brother and me into the family Chevette and drive west across the state, Clark Griswold style, as we made our way to Fort Robinson for vacation. Along the way we’d stop in small towns and at tourist attractions to see the sites of Nebraska.

I’ve always loved Louisville, Kentucky. I’ve visited Louisville about a dozen times in my life for a multitude of reasons. When I was in college my roommate’s parents lived there and we would sometimes make the 4 hour drive from Virginia Tech just for a weekend of some nice home cooked meals. We also stopped in with his folks many times over the years while we were on our way out west to ski and while traveling around the country chasing our favorite bands.

Back in March of this year I received an email from Jeff, a member at Victoria National Golf Club, inviting me to join him for a game sometime. Of course I immediately accepted and we made plans that would suit both of our schedules since Jeff lives several hours away in St. Louis and would be traveling to the club as well. Victoria National is located in Newburgh, Indiana, near Evansville, and I determined that the most sensible approach would be to fly into the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport and rent a car . . .

At 4:30AM the alarm clock went off and instead of my usual slap at the snooze bar I happily jumped from bed and started the day. After getting cleaned up and dressed I hopped in my car and drove to the airport in order to make my 6:46AM flight to New York’s LaGuardia airport. Fortunately, my plane took off on time and by 8:00AM I was safely on the ground in my destination.
