Webb Simpson Comes From Behind To Continue The U.S. Open Tradition at Olympic Club

Posted on June 18th, 2012

Another U.S. Open has wrapped up and it was a pretty exciting one. One of the top stories from the Thursday and Friday rounds are the big names that didn’t make the cut. Both the current Masters champion (Bubba Watson) and defending U.S. Open champion (Rory McIlroy) spent the weekend watching from home and having to suffer through Johnny Miller’s “a groove too low” commentary with the rest of us. Other top ranked players who did not play the weekend at Olympic Club are Luke Donald, Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen. Olympic Club played very tough and it definitely

U.S. Open Kick-off!!!

Posted on June 11th, 2012

U.S. Open week is finally here! Because the PGA Tour is already covered at length on other websites I try not to write about it much here. That said, I can’t help myself when it comes to the majors . . . and besides, it’s pretty hard to not get excited about the U.S. Open. If you arrived at this post via my homepage you may have noticed that all the homepage content has been changed to U.S. Open oriented posts. I love this major championship and am going to keep all my posts this week relevant to the

2012 U.S. Open Groupings Commentary

Posted on June 8th, 2012

The pairings are out for the 2012 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club and as usual the USGA has done a great job. Some of the groups that I’m excited to see are: Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood Jason Day, Louis Oosthuizen, Jason Dufner Rickie Fowler, Ryo Ishikawa, Dustin Johnson Adam Scott, Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson There are a lot of other great groups, but those are the ones that really jumped out at me. Interestingly the U.S.G.A. broke their tradition of pairing the reigning U.S. Open champion with the reigning British

2012 U.S. Open at Olympic Club

Posted on May 22nd, 2012

Yesterday afternoon I was thinking about the upcoming U.S. Open at The Olympic Club’s Lake Course. Of the courses where the U.S. Open has been held over the last 20 years, I have been fortunate enough to visit all of them except for Oakland Hills and Torrey Pines. As I realized this it got me thinking about which U.S. Open course had been the toughest for me as a player. Bethpage Black is a course that comes up in this discussion fairly regularly and it’s a valid contender for sure. The Black is brutal and can eat players alive

Bubba Hooks a Green Jacket!

Posted on April 9th, 2012

Wow, what can I say? Another great Masters this year! Here are a few of my favorite moments.

Fred Couples looked like he might turn back the clock 20 years after 36 holes. He didn’t quite have enough gas in the tank but it was fun to wake up Saturday morning thinking he might pull off a dark horse victory.

Happy Masters week to everyone! This week seems like as good a time as any to send out my latest update. I’m excited to watch the tournament and as usual I expect that its going to be a great one. I am continuing to plug away at my Top 100 quest, although I have not played any new Top 100 courses since my visit to Shadow Creek last fall which means I’m still holding tight at 71 courses visited. I’m hoping to make my first Top 100 trip in late April but am still sorting out all the details.

Papa Got A New Pair of Shoes

Posted on February 21st, 2012

This website has been online for 5 years now and during that time I have never written any sort golf equipment review. I’m not really keen on jumping into such a heavily populated pool, so I’ve always avoided it. That said, I recently bought a golf product that I love so much I feel compelled to comment here.

Happy New Year! I hope 2011 ended with a fun and safe holiday season for everyone. 2011 was a great year for the the Top 100 Golf Odyssey with visits to 15 new courses from the list as well as quite a few non-list courses and a couple of revisits to some favorites. The current tally is 71 courses played and 29 remaining. Hard to believe I’ve made it this far. Of course, Golf Digest will release a new list next year, so I’m expecting to fall backwards a little bit, but I’ll worry about that next year. The

Welcome to the new version of The Itinerant Golfer.  Please bear with me as I am still doing a lot of clean up to the site and getting everything where it belongs and at the proper size.  You will want to update any bookmarks or RSS feeds that you have set as the old ones are now defunct.  I also have a Facebook page and Twitter feed so feel free to click on the buttons in the header to follow The Itinerant Golfer there. Thanks again for your patience and I hope to get everything just exactly perfect over
