by Tom Doak The ultimate golf course book. As a student of golf course architecture Tom Doak, now a world renowned golf course architect, gives his unvarnished opinion on hundreds of golf courses around the world. This is a must have for any lover of golf courses and golf travel. That said the book is out of print and can be very difficult to find. First editions copies are very valuable, but later editions occasionally pop up on Amazon and can be had for a more reasonable price. This is the one book no golf course aficionado should miss.

This book certainly resonates with me on a very personal level. Not long before I began my quest to play the Top 100 Larry Berle completed his own Top 100 journey and wrote a book chronicling his adventures. In the fall of 2007, when I was a mere five courses into my Top 100 odyssey this book was recommended to me by a friend. It's a fun and easy read that gives me a little inspiration to keep after my goal even when the odds were stacked against me.

After a couple of days of playing Golf around Austin Andy, A.C. and I headed roughly an hour northwest to Horseshoe Bay where we would be visiting Escondido Golf and Lake Club. Andy’s high school buddy, Geoff, is a member here and would be hosting us for a game on the Tom Fazio designed golf course. On the way to Horseshoe Bay we drove right past Austin Golf Club in Spicewood which is Ben Crenshaw’s club

An entertaining look at life as a golfer. If you have spent any time around golf clubs and like a good chuckle this is the book for you. I was able to finish it over the duration of a couple of flights so its a quick and easy read.

My favorite line from the book is one that the author overheard between two golfers talking finances . . . "This year has really been a tough one, but Mumsie died so things are looking up." You just can't make this stuff up!

By the middle of March in Virginia the golf season starts to slowly come out of hibernation. The bermuda grass begins greening up and we start catching mid-60 to 70 degree days, but it’s still largely a tease because the golf courses don’t really start to hit their stride until mid to late May. In addition to the slow move out of dormancy there are also spring maintenance issues like greens aerations to deal with.

On my recent trip to Pinehurst we played three new courses and revisited an old favorite. The third new course that we played was Whispering Woods in Whispering Pines. Whispering Woods was one of the more economical alternatives to the higher priced courses in the Pinehurst area that I had selected for this trip. I stumbled across this course on the internet and was excited to find that it had been designed by Ellis Maple who has designed some pretty good golf courses around the Carolinas including Grandfather Golf and Country Club which I had really enjoyed. The fact that we could play it for a scant $35 made it even more appealing.

As usual, I was the one who had the responsibility for selecting the courses when my group visited Pinehurst last month. Typically with this group we like to play one or two really good courses and then try to find a couple of low priced options that are not necessarily marquee name courses. After settling on Dormie Club (I can’t stop going back there. This would be my third visit!) and Mid Pines as our top shelf options I began to do some internet research in order to find lower price options for our other two games.

Wow, what can I say? Another great Masters this year! Here are a few of my favorite moments.

Fred Couples looked like he might turn back the clock 20 years after 36 holes. He didn't quite have enough gas in the tank but it was fun to wake up Saturday morning thinking he might pull off a dark horse victory.

Happy Masters week to everyone! This week seems like as good a time as any to send out my latest update. I’m excited to watch the tournament and as usual I expect that its going to be a great one. I am continuing to plug away at my Top 100 quest, although I have not played any new Top 100 courses since my visit to Shadow Creek last fall which means I’m still holding tight at 71 courses visited. I’m hoping to make my first Top 100 trip in late April but am still sorting out all the details. [...]
