This website has been online for 5 years now and during that time I have never written any sort golf equipment review. I’m not really keen on jumping into such a heavily populated pool, so I’ve always avoided it. That said, I recently bought a golf product that I love so much I feel compelled to comment here.
NOTE: Let me first start by saying that I have no equity stake or affiliation with any golf equipment or apparel company. I do not accept advertising on this website and I do not participate in the “Pay Per Post” industry. This post, like everything at TheItinerantGolfer.com is simply a guy talking about the game of golf out of pure adoration and love for playing. Ok, now onto the review.
I believe that golf is a game best played walking. Since I walk over 100 rounds a year I have long been obsessed with finding comfortable shoes to play in. Early this year TRUE Linkswear, a relative newcomer to golf footwear, launched a product called the TRUE phx. After witnessing the love-fest that has surrounded TRUE Linkswear’s products for the last year I decided to order a pair of the new phx model. When the shoes arrived a few days later I was surprised to find that they were incredibly well made and much higher quality than I had been expecting for $99.
Once I actually put the shoes on I was even more impressed. TRUE’s barefoot platform is based on the idea that less is more and I think they just may be on to something. I was blown away by how comfortable my feet felt in these shoes with their minimalist design and wide toe box. Maybe there is something to the TRUE love-fest. Before I could be 100% certain I really needed to take the shoes for a spin on the course.
Since it is the dead of winter here in Virginia I had to wait about a week before taking my shoes on their maiden voyage. When I caught a nice weather day I threw on my TRUES, hit a bucket of balls on the range and walked three holes to see how they felt. Well, they felt great . . . unbelievably great. So great in fact that I rushed home and ordered a second pair. Consider me fully converted. I played a full 18 hole round in my TRUES this past Saturday and they were absolutely incredible. Simply put they are the most comfortable golf shoes I have ever owned and maybe even the most comfortable non-golf shoes as well!
The only shortcoming I can find with the TRUE phx is that they are water resistant and not 100% waterproof. Of course, at a retail price of $99 (through Amazon.com or the TRUE website) we cannot have everything and if you want waterpoof shoes the TRUE tours and TRUE stealth models offer this feature. I’m sure with the success of the phx model that TRUE will be releasing a fully water proof version at a slightly higher price sometime in the near future. Also of note is that Ryan Moore is wearing TRUES on the PGA Tour, so I also expect to see some new color options and limited edition models on his feet throughout the course of the 2012 season. I can’t help but wonder how long its going to take for the next PGA Tour player to catch on and start wearing TRUES.
Looking at my old golf shoes right now I am counting 11 pair, so I think it’s fairly safe to say that I’ve kissed a lot of frogs over the last couple of years. Fortunately that exercise is over, so the only question remaining is what do I do with all of these????
